Yes, every copywriter knows about the essence of the task but little do they know that effect of it to several audiences. A topic may be as interesting as it is but it can get boring with how the copywriter makes use of the words. With that, here are the rules of thumb in copywriting.
Always Write a Brief Introduction and Summary
Most of the time, writers get lost in their thoughts and begin to write a lengthy paragraph. It is a rule of thumb to keep the introduction and summary short as the content of the article is more important. It is best to keep the introduction no more than 80 words, and the summary less than 100 words. Be sure to write the summary as briefly as possible. It should recap the whole content Â but not to the point of boredom. This also goes with the introduction. It should provide a general overview of the topic but it does not have to specifically define every subtopic.
Never focus on Oneself
This happens when the article is written in a conversational tone. Most often than not, copywriters begin to talk about themselves instead of focusing on the needs of the audience. In an article, the audience would always want to find out the benefits that they can get out of the content. Therefore, it is good to focus on the readers and not to oneself. Focusing on self equates dullness and boredom.
Break a long copy
A one long paragraph is hard to read, if not straining to the eyes. Meanwhile, a copy that is broken down into separate paragraphs creates easy reading. Aside from that, breaking the contents into paragraph allows relaxation to the eyes so that the audience can avoid eye strains. As a rule of thumb, it is best to contain a paragraph with three to five sentences, not exceeding to 100 words. An article can have different number of paragraphs but in a typical 500-word article, the most accepted structure is to maintain six to seven numbers of paragraphs.
No to plagiarism
Of course, this is one of the most basic and important rule of thumb in copywriting. Never ever copy the exact content of the original article. Instead, look for other articles that can be combined into one whole write-up. Remember that different words can convey one idea and that is what copywriting is all about. As a rule of thumb, never copy 5 exact words in a sentence, and it is not allowed to write an article that has the same subheadings with the original one. Better yet, create a unique content by using different words but with the same idea.
